GARNOCK CLUSTER IS CURRENLTY NOT A PRIORITY CLUSTER
I work in this cluster from Tuesday through to Friday as a PE teacher at Garnock Academy. Although, this area is not a priority at present, if your school or Garnock cluster would like some input, please contact me ASAP.
The Garnock Cluster Transitions Programme
We are currently working on the cluster transitions programme. The theme this year is 'The Street' - Joanne McDougal (Moorpark Primary) and myself are working on the production of a 'Street Games' programme based on the Toy Library Street Games Box pack (sourced by our fantastic librarian Gillian Gillespie). This programme will be delivered at primary school level during week 1 of the transitions and then with some modifications and additional games at secondary school level during week 2. This programme will compliment the work that will be delivered by the rest of the departments all of whom are driving forward 'The Street' theme is some form or another.
Leadership Courses that support our Tranisition Programme
In order to promote good partnership working, alternative curriculum options and provide further support to our primary - secondary transitions, Garnock Academy PE department offers 3 different Leadership awards, which are available to Senior pupils from S4 onwards. This involves our senior pupils from Garnock assisting a teacher of Garnock Academy to deliver a range of 4-6 week blocks of PE to the pupils of the local primary schools (Moorpark in particular), to some of our S1-S2 pupils, aswell as delivering voluntary physical activity opportunities in the local community.
Sports LeadershipPupils from Moorpark primary are invited down to Garnock Academy where they get access to the facilities and equipment whilst a member of the PE department delilvers a PE session to them. The Sports Leaders act as assistants working with small group of pupils during this session, encouraging differentiation for learning success, indiviudal and group praise and feedback and further support should any of the primary pupils require it.
Just before Easter, once strong links and relationships have been formed, the sports leaders use the knowledge gained over the year to organise a tournament for the primary pupils. All organisation is given over to the young leaders. This has proved extremely successful over the last few years and gives both sets of pupils an excellent educational experience where all 4 capacities of curriculum for excellence is targeted. |
Dance LeadershipThe Dance leaders invite a variety of pupils from Moorpark primary to Garnock Academy where they are given access to a 4 week dance block. The Dance leaders are responsible for the choreography and the planning of the sessions, however a member of the PE department oversees the quality of delivery and in the assurance that it is a Physical Education lesson and not just a Physical Activity. The Dance leaders work with small group of pupils during the session, encouraging differentiation for learning success, indiviudal and group praise, and feedback/further support should any of the primary pupils require it.
In addition the Dance Leaders are encouraged to run a lunch time or after school Dance Club to provide additional opportunites for the pupils of Garnock Academy. There are times throughout the year where, if timetabling allows, the Dance leaders will get an opportunity to deliver a block or isolated lesson to S1 or S2 pupils (such as the Girls Magazine) Just before Easter (around RED Nose Day time or the Garnock 5K event), the dance leaders are given the chance to organise a charity event, a dance display, a dance competition or talent show entry for the dance enthusiasts of Garnock Academy. All organisation is given over to the young leaders. This was a great success this year with an Evolution of Dance, Dance off between S2 and S3. Another great opportunity for responsible citizens, confident individuals, successful learners and effective contributers!!! |
Community Sports LeadershipMr Garnder is in charge of this programme. The CSLA leaders are given the opportunity to deliver PE lessons to our S1 and S2 pupils throughout the year. In addition they have to volunteer within the community for a certain number of hours. At the end of the year, the pupils present their feelings and experiences to the S4's who are about to make their timetable choices for the next year. A great opportunity to celebrate success and put key skills for life into practice.
